The Parana-Paraguay river system shows different types of this fluvial formulations (fringe floodplains, delta floodplains and the internal delta), each one exposing distinctive geological and geomorphological characteristics and influence of the river bioproductivity. Since the fringe floodplain of the Middle and Lower Parana river is the best studied, this paper deals with the most salient limnological features of this particular alluvial plain, specially those concerning the biological productivity of river waters, including fisheries. It is concluded that all programs dealing with river regulations which may affect these floodplains should be based on a deep knowledge of the river systems, in order to avoid irreversible damage to their most important limnological characteristics, mainly those affecting water bioproductivity. -from Author
