Abstract:
Contemposraneous charcoal and Mytilus edulis shells sampled in sites from three different localities along the channel were 14C dated and their age differences were calculated. Charcoal ages, considered as 'true ages', range from 5600 to 360 14C yr BP and age differences between charcoal and Mytilus show good reproducibility except for one of the localities. Marine and terrestrial samples from such locality show smaller differences which are attributed to the local influence of a river with a high organic matter content. An age difference of 556+ or -61yr is proposed to correct 14C dates of marine organisms in this area.-Authors
