Abstract:

The aim of this contribution is to evaluate the ability of a mesoscale meteorological model in the simulation of turbulent fluxes and the main features of the atmospheric boundary layer in two sites in Argentina. Data from fast response instruments mounted in micrometeorological towers were available. The numerical model is the Brazilian version of the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System. Simulations in case studies covered different periods. Sensitivity tests to initial conditions and horizontal resolution were done. During a case study in the austral summer, at the site with native forest, the sensible heat flux was well reproduced while the latent heat flux was underestimated. At the other site, with an implanted forest, both fluxes were overestimated. The model was able to reproduce properly the energy apportionment at both locations. Although the estimation of boundary layer height was not the main focus of the micrometeorological measurements, a model intercomParison between the values obtained with an analytical model and the mesoscale model was done. The behavior of the models was affected by the methodology in the numerical model to estimate the boundary layer height and in the analytical model by the uncertainties in the measured turbulent fluxes. © Crown Copyright 2014 Dstl.
