The motion of a large particle representing an aggregate in a three-phase slurry reactor was followed by the Radioactive Particle Tracking technique to analyze the effect of the agitating velocity and of the presence of suspended solids. Gas-liquid system employed was octane-nitrogen and the suspended solid was a powder of 70 μm mean dia with density of around 6.7 kg/cu m. The tracer particle used was a crystal of NaCl activated by neutron bombardment. The tracer motion was strongly dependent on the agitating velocity and was also affected, although less significantly, by the presence of suspended solids. The tracer probability of remaining in the bottom of the vessel decreased sharply as the agitating velocity was increased and also when the suspended solids were not present. The velocity fields showed the distorted flow stream around the baffles and the vortices formed around the blades of the turbine. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montréal, Quebec, Canada 8/23-27/2009).
