Abstract:

Fundamental aspects of the theoretical basis of the fluorescence phenomenon are described in this chapter. The critical properties that a candidate molecule should have to perform as a probe for image–guided surgery are also discussed and illustrated with recently reported examples. Additionally, the potential use of nanoparticles as fluorescent probes is discussed under the light of the latest reports. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
