Abstract:

Metals and metalloids may be toxic to algae and can generate reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative stress, which impairs antioxidant defenses and produces oxidation of essential molecules. As a consequence of the development of water-dependent activities such as mining, industry, and agriculture, arsenic levels in aquatic ecosystems have been increasing. The microalga Euglena gracilis is one of the few planktonic microorganisms that grow in highly contaminated environments with arsenic, such as in mining tailings. The toxicity of sodium arsenite in two strains of the freshwater microalga E. gracilis was studied by comparing culture growth and by measuring some indicators of the antioxidant response and oxidative damage. We show evidence for the two E. gracilis strains that the toxicity response to sodium arsenite involves oxidative stress processes. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
