Abstract:
Quaternary loess deposits, reworked by fluvial and aeolian processes, filled the Salí River basin in Tucumán Province, Argentina, and are the source of high concentrations of As, F, V, B, U and Mo in shallow groundwaters. The average chemical composition of loess is similar to that of a dacite and it exhibits many components of volcanic origin (mainly plagioclases, quartz, K-feldspar and glass shards). Sorption and desorption processes onto the surface of Fe- and Al-oxides regulate the distribution of trace elements and their mobility in the basin. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
