When image slicers are used, the length of the lines in high dispersion stellar spectra may become longer than desirable. Then it is necessary to demagnify the line length to reduce the exposure time. In this paper line profiles are obtained for anamorphic cameras and for the Bowen lens. If a reference spectrum is required or the camera is of small focal ratio (F/D < 10), anamorphic cameras are desirable. Otherwise the Bowen lens gives better results, but other considerations must be taken into account too. © 1980, Optical Society of America.
