Abstract:

The influence of reactor (γ+n) preirradiation on the dissolution of magnetite microcrystals synthetized by a low-temperature wet method was studied. The solvent used was an acid aqueous solution of ascorbic acid. Neither the mechanism of reaction nor the nature of the reactive sites is changed by irradiation, but the number of the latter decrease. These reactive sites are postulated to be iron ions surrounded by imperfect coordination polyhedra, and the influence of radiation traced to the annealing of these sites. The relevance of the results for the use of synthetic oxides as models of nuclear power reactor oxide layers is discussed. © 1990.
