Abstract:
The energy straggling for protons impinging on thin solid films of Al, Si, Zn and Au was studied by means of a theoretical model. The different mechanisms involved in the energy dispersion were also investigated. It was found that the energy dispersion produced by single-particle collisions with valence electrons was the dominant contribution at low energies, and reached a saturation value when the velocity increased. Inner-shell straggling was found to be important at intermediate and high velocities. © Oxford University Press 2002.
