Abstract:

The double-ionization Compton profile [Formula Presented] of a two-electron system is studied using highly correlated configuration-interaction–type wave functions for the initial state. For the case of helium we calculate the double-ionization profile using an uncorrelated double-continuum final state, which is a good approximation for the kinematic conditions of high-momentum transfer. Excellent agreement with the predictions of the impulse approximation (IA) is obtained. However, the use of a double-continuum wave function accounts for an asymmetry in the profile, in contrast with the symmetric peak predicted by the IA. Results for other two-electron systems are presented within the IA, and the high-[Formula Presented] scaling property of the profile is found. The different momentum regions of the profile are discussed in terms of the physical mechanism of double ionization. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

  • If both orbitals are described by the same charge (Formula presented) the profile is of the form (Formula presented); whereas if both orbitals have different charges (Formula presented) it is of the form (Formula presented); Wong, T.C., Mendelsohn, L.B., Grossman, H., Wellenstein, H.F., (1982) Phys. • It should be pointed out that the sign of the asymmetry, as defined by Eq. (17), depends on how one defines (Formula presented) If instead of defining (Formula presented) as in Eq. (7), we define (Formula presented), the asymmetry will change sign; At the photon energies considered in Fig. 11, the total electron energies at the peak value (Formula presented) are about 3.2 keV and 5.4 keV for (Formula presented) keV and (Formula presented) keV, respectively. The main contribution to the profile (Formula presented) comes here from an asymmetric electron energy sharing, in which one of both electrons takes less than 50 eV. This gives a relative momentum (Formula presented) a.u., and thus the electron-electron Sommerfeld parameter is (Formula presented) a.u. Final-state correlations are then expected to play a minor role in this case. For high-energy photoionization, where a similar asymmetric energy sharing takes place, the use of Eq. (5) for describing the final state gives good agreement with the experiments; Surić, T., Pisk, K., Pratt, R.H., (1996) Phys. Lett. A, 211, p. 289. , PYLAAG
