Abstract:

A case study is presented, which addresses the origin of H2S in produced gas associated with the oil in Las Heras-Cerro Grande oilfield, Argentina. The possible mechanisms of reservoir souring are analyzed by sulfur isotope ratio analysis. H2S concentration vary between 9 and 453 ppm/vol. The greater concentration of H2S occur where the water cut is greater. The isotopic values suggest a microbial souring mechanism. The first alternative for H2S removal is to treat the produced gas with chemical agents based on triazines and to reduce the amount of sulfate reducing bacteria in the injection water. Other analyzed options were squeeze treatments in producing wells with biocides, oxidants, or sulfide scavengers. One of the most attractive options consisted in using biocompetitive exclusion processes (BCX). The BCX process has clear advantages for effective sulfide suppression as compared to previous biocide treatments. This is an abstract of a paper presented at SPE International Symposium on Oilfield Chemistry (Houston, TX 2/2-4/2005).
