Abstract:

Recurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of the eye result in corneal damage and eventually loss of vision. Therefore, there is a continuing need to develop new antiviral drugs. Our laboratory is engaged in searching for natural compounds with antiviral activity. We previously reported that meliacine (MA), a partially purified compound isolated from crude leaf extracts from Melia azedarach L., effectively inhibits HSV-I multiplication in vitro when added before or after infection. Our present findings indicate that MA prevents the development of murine herpetic stromal keratitis by affecting both viral yields in the eyes as well as the incidence and severity of the signs of disease, when administered topically either before or after infection, with no toxic effects [I].
