Abstract:

Fortyeight freshwater algae (excluding Cyanophyceae) were identified from nine lakes and pools at Hope Bay (Antarctic Peninsula). The geographic distribution in Antarctica and the ecological characteristics of the sampling sites are given for each taxa. Sixteen of them, new records for Antarctica, are described and illustrated. Among the algal classes treated here, Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae constitute the most diverse groups. Most of the species found have been recorded from Antarctica, and many of them are widespread. Some degree of polymorphism was observed in Bacillariophyceae and Tribophyceae taxa. © 1994, Antarctic Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
