Abstract:

This paper shows the behaviour of the surface electromagnetic waves (SEW) at a metal-uniaxial crystal interface. The calculations are performed for the Kretschmann configuration by means of a computer program developed for thin films on an anisotropic substrate. In the experimental device a metal film in the shape of a wedge was deposited on calcite and the SEW was excited from a prism of flint glass of high refraction index with a contact liquid. We observed the total absorption of one of the polarization modes due to resonance with the SEW. © 1995 Taylor and Francis Ltd.
