Abstract:
An analysis of different expressions proposed in the literature for the description of the high-temperature internal friction background is presented. All the equations suggested include an exponential dependence of the internal friction with the reciprocal of the temperature, plus a pre-exponential term which, in general, depends both on frequency and on temperature. Due to the dominance of the exponential term, however, it is difficult, with the usual experimental techniques, to obtain information of the pre-exponential factor. A new experimental technique is presented, which uses a torsion pendulum with variable moment of inertia, operating in such a way that it is possible to obtain the high-temperature internal friction background as a function of temperature, both at variable and at constant frequency. This gives information not only on the damping but also on its changes with frequency and temperature. Finally, it is shown how the new measuring technique and the analysis of the data can be used, by applying them to actual experimental data obtained in Zircaloy-4 and magnesium. © 1992, The Japan Institute of Metals.
