Abstract:

An elastic backscatter Lidar is in operation at Buenos Aires (34.6S, 58.5W) for more than 8 years now starting in August 1995. A large data set has been collected on atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), natural and anthropogenic aerosols, mid and high cirrus clouds. Different improvements have been made over the years to the original single wavelength Lidar including a companion 8.2 cm diameter Cassegrain telescope to improve the signal dynamics and overlap geometrical factor in order to start the Lidar measurements closer to the ground. At present, the practical range for the 532 nm parallel channel extends from 50 m up to 22 km altitude during daytime and up to 28 km during nightime. In order to increase the overall Lidar capability a 1064 nm channel is implemented on the two receivers i.e. the 50 cm- and 8.2 cm diameter telescopes, and a depolarisation capability is implemented on the 50 cm diameter telescope. The science objectives motivating the experimental work presented here are the monitoring of the troposphere for environmental issue and radiative transfert applications. The Lidar station is intended to contribute to various satellite validation plans including the on going CALIPSO (NASA-CNES) spaceborne Lidar programme to be launched in mars 2005.
