Abstract:

Anatomical and cytochemical features of the stigma and style of Vigna adenantha (G.F. Meyer), Marechal, Mascherpa and Stainer (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae), were studied. The stigma is secretory, wet type and necrotic at the maturity. Its cuticle is wavy, irregular and continuous. In longitudinal sections and using light microscopy, the stigma shows the followings differentiated zones: a) receptive surface, b) central bulk of cells as a 'core' of transmitting tissue. The distal portion of the style is solid and gradually passes to the hollow semisolid condition. One or a few layers of transmitting tissue surround the canal of the style. The secretion product stains for lipids, proteins and polysaccharides and contributes to adhesion and germination of pollen grains.
