Abstract:
Five radiocarbon dates were obtained from two independent outcrops in Sierra Catan Lil, Patagonia, 1000m asl and 50km E from the Cordillera de los Andes. This is the first radiocarbon Pleistocene sequence from the area and one of the samples, fossil carbonized tree fragment interbedded in conglomeratic strata, has the 14C of 35 500 BP. Histological analysis proves more similarity with cypress (Austrocedrus) than with 'alerce' (Fitzroya). The other four samples were obtained from peat strata interstratified in a 20m thick volcanic ash and diatomaceous layer. Their age varies from 27 900 to 32 600 BP. The peat layers contain some strawberry (Fragaria) seeds. Some tentative comparisons with synchronous events of the Southern Hemisphere are made, and the conclusion is reached that the sequence may correspond with interstadial conditions. -English summary
