Abstract:

The Glutathione S-transferases (GST) of non-vertebrate organisms have not received the detailed scrutinity accorded to those from mammals. The interest in GST of non-vertebrate organisms is based in the involvement of the enximes in protecting the organism from toxic foreign compounds in the environment. Actually it has been observed that elevated levels of these enximes might be associated with tolerance to pesticides. The intention of this review is therefore the ascertain to what level of knowledge about GST in non-vertebrates has been reached and to see how these enximes compare with those of mammals. To evaluate what particular contribution these studies have made to our knowledge of the function of these enximes generally and to attempt to discern in what direction research efforts might be directed in the near future.
