We have previously reported the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the rat uterus and also advanced the hypothesis about a possible regulation by estrogens of uterine GABA. In view of these precedents and considering that the rat uterus has two regions, mesometrial and antimesometrial (implantation area), it was explored whether gestation influences GABA concentration in these two regions of the pregnant rat uterus. GABA levels were determined at the time of complete implantation (7th day), at the moment of full placental development (16th day) and on the last day of pregnancy (22nd day) and compared with non-pregnant control estrous rats. GABA was assayed by enzymatic reduction of NADP by GABAase. Although mesometrial GABA did not change during pregnancy, the implantation region presented a significantly lower concentration of GABA. The findings suggest a functional role of GABA in the gestating reproductive tract which would indicate an effect related to the blastocyst implantation.
