In male Wistar rats intraperitoneal injection (21 days) of mianserin, a tetracyclic antidepressant (10 mg/kg), produced significant dimunition (p < 0.01) of brain noradrenaline content without any changes in dopamine or serotonin content. Amoxapine, a tricyclic antidepressant with a potent inhibitory action of catecholamine presynaptic uptake (10 mg/kg i.p.), did not produce any changes in brain monoamine content. During the experiments the rats treated with mianserin were more quiet than the controls and remained crowded together.
