Abstract:

1. 1. Freshly frozen soft tissue of the prosobranch mollusc Patinigera magellanica, collected at South Atlantic waters in Argentina, during the intertidal period, contained a mixture of common C27, C28 and C29 sterols where cholesterol was the major component. 2. 2. Besides them, oxygenated Δ5-7-keto sterols and Δ4-3-keto steroids were present as minor components. 3. 3. Δ3,5-7-keto steroids were also present and are supposed to be artifacts of the corresponding 3β-hydroxylated compounds. 4. 4. The steroid mixture was fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and individual components were compared with authentic standards. © 1986.
