Abstract:

1. 1. The cuticular lipids of males, females and 5th instar nymphs of Triatoma infestans were extracted with hexane. 2. 2. The total content of lipids extracted varied from 0.02 to 0.12% of insect wet weight. 3. 3. Lipids were mainly constituted by fatty alcohols, hydrocarbons, waxes, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids, diacylglycerols and small amounts of cholesterol, cholesterol esters, monoacylglycerols and traces of polar lipids. 4. 4. The lipid composition varied quantitatively according with developmental stage, sex and origin. 5. 5. The fatty acid pattern of triacylglycerols, diacylglycerols and free acids was similar. 6. 6. Palmitic and oleic were the principle fatty acids followed by stearic, myristic, palmitoleic and linoleic acids. 7. 7. In addition, significant amounts of saturated fatty acids of 20 to 34 carbons were found. Hexacosanoic acid was the principal component. © 1984.
