This paper describes experimental work on contact electric charges in rice grains obtained by vibratory motion over an anodized aluminium plate. Brown rice and grains after three different times of milling were tested, varying the moisture content. The specific charge was determined by a simultaneous measurement of charge and mass. A negative electric charge is obtained for brown rice and a positive one for milled rice grains. When the time of milling is short, the sign of the charges is variable, as was verified by an induction probe measurement of charge in individual grains. A preliminary interpretation of the results and suggestions for future work are given. © 1988.
