The application of laser techniques to assess transport properties of liquids using fluorescent molecules to trace translational or rotational diffusion has become an efficient and versatile tool nowadays. This work reports the experimental set up and preliminary runs of an optical device to measure the translational diffusion coefficient of aqueous Systems containing sucrose and trehalose in its liquid, supercooled and glassy regime, using the 'Fuorescence Recovery After Photobleaching' technique. The assessment of this and other transport properties in these particular systems are of great importance to determine their utility as bio-protector agents. We present preliminary results for the diffusion coefficient of fluoresceine in water-sucrose solution in its liquid and supercooled state. © 2001 SPIE · 0277-786X/01/$15.00.
