Abstract:

The development of the Laser has facilitated interferometric applications though, to avoid the associated coherent noise, extended sources which can yield localization planes are often employed so the only perturbations detected are those appearing on these planes. Whether the fringes are localized or not depends both on the source and on the class of interferometer. In two beam wavefront division interferometers, an extended, incoherent and continuous source yields no fringes, but if the source is periodic then the behaviour depends on how the two 'interfering sources' are formed. In the present paper theoretical and experimental results for Young's interferometer are obtained both for quasi-monochromatic and white radiations.
