Abstract:

It has been indicated that beginning of the major faunal interchange between South and North America occurred during the Late Pliocene. North American mammal fossils were found in Argentinian sediments included in the Montehermosense Land Mammal Age, assigned to the Late Pliocene, suggesting the establishment of a land bridge between South and North America. The magnetostratigraphy recorded in a sequence of Late Cenozoic sediments included in the Ensenadense Land Mammal age (two faunistic units younger than the Montehermosense, Middle Pleistocene), exposed in the walls of two excavations carried out in the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina), suggests a Matuyama-Late Gauss magnetic age (≥0.7 Ma, Middle Pleistocene - ≤2.84 Ma, Late Pliocene) for these sediments. This suggests that the beginning of the major faunal interchange between South and North America occurred before the Late Pliocene; therefore the establishment of the land bridge between South and North America occurred even earlier than the Late Pliocene. © 1987.
