The cyclogenetic zone of the southern Latin American Atlantic littoral, up to 40° south, is the scene of the formation and deepening of extratropical cyclones. These characterize stormy weather periods, specially in the Rio de la Plata region (Argentina) and in the Santa Catalina Gulf in the southern coast of Brazil. These cyclonic developments are often preceded or accompanied by cloud activity of convective type. This role also seems to have importance previous to the development, favouring it and after somehow marking the future trajectory of the cyclone. The behaviour of the convective clouds is studied through the application of a numerical model which permits the knowledge of cloud microphysics.
