Abstract:

The effect of superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) on the post-thyroidectomy rise of serum TSH levels was examined in rats up to 360 h after surgery. Thyroidectomy brought about an impending increase of serum TSH, already detectable 16 h after surgery. In rats subjected to SCGx and thyroidectomy, significantly lower TSH titers than in thyroidectomized animals were observed up to 24 h after surgery. Additionally a delay of 8h in the initial post-thyroidectomy TSH rise was found in SCGx rats. At longer times after surgery (48-360 h) a higher serum TSH concentration was detectable in SCGx rats. SCGx rats hardly survived (0-10% survival) in a cold environment after 48 h regardless of whether the animals had been priorly adapted to the cold for a month.
