The objective of the present work is to determine the kinetic parameters of the reaction with oxygen of char samples prepared from subbituminous coal of the Río Turbio (Argentina) mine field and to characterize the reaction behavior at different temperatures. Kinetic measurements were performed at different reaction temperatures and oxygen concentrations by isothermic thermogravimetrical analysis. The intrinsic activation energy and the true reaction order were 29 kcal mol and 0.54 respectively. The results obtained for chemically controlled reaction rates were satisfactory fitted by the random capillary model. The parameters determined in this work do not differ widely from those found in the literature even for chars/coals of different rank. © 1987.
