Abstract:
Birefringence of 4-cyano-4′-n-hexylbiphenyl (6CB) and 4-cyano-4′-n-heptylbyphenyl (7CB) was measured directly under a magnetic field (1200 G and 2000 G) as a function of temperature. Electrical dipole moments were calculated with the Mechetti-Barón equations from measurements at three temperatures. Molecular geometries were examined with a semi-empirical procedure (AMPAC). Differences with previously studied 4-cyano-4′-n-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) were observed. © 1991.
