We show that the assumption of equivalence between initial conditions (usually chosen when dealing with Newton equations) and time boundary conditions (preferred in Hamiltonian formalism) is not always warranted. The harmonic oscillator and the damped oscillator are simple examples that we use to illustrate the problem. © 1999 IOP Publishing Ltd.
