Paleomagnetic data for Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks from the South American and Patagonian platforms and the Andean chain were recomputed or reevaluated. The reliable data for Lower and Upper Cretaceous rocks from the Andean Chain for sampling sites situated north of Arica do not support the abrupt change in the trend of the Andes north of Arica (Bolivian orocline) as being post-orogenic. The distribution of the Late Cretaceous paleomagnetic poles for South America, including those for the Upper Cretaceous rocks exposed in the Andean chain north of Arica, can be interpreted as the effect of an apparent polar shift of this continent. The paleomagnetic data of the Early and Late Cretaceous rocks from the Andean chain exposed north of Arica can then be explained by continental-scale geodynamic processes.
