Abstract:

The blue and white pigments, media and grounds from two series of Arcángeles Arcabuceros of the Andean colonial style have been studied by chemical and spectroscopic methods. In one series smalt was found to be the blue pigment, with indigo in the other. Both were mixed with lead white and were identified with the aid of electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. The organic components were studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and identified by comparison with authentic standards. The use of smalt as a blue pigment in colonial painting is unexpected. This research is part of a project that aims to study the materials from Spanish colonial painting and is the first reported chemical investigation undertaken on this type of work of art. © 1994 Maney publishing.
