Abstract:

Intimal hyperplasia development has been largely recognized as the most important cause of vascular access failure in patients submitted to hemodialysis as a consequence of end stage renal failure. Similar cause of postoperative vessel occlusion is observed in revascularized patients, both, using saphenous vein graft or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) prostheses. Elastic mismatch between the native vessel and the graft has been pointed out as the cause of intimal hyperplasia development. In this work the most utilized indexes, used to characterize mechanical arterial wall properties in patients, are described. Furthermore, a biomechanical analysis of arteries, veins, and ePTFE prostheses is reported.
