Abstract:

This paper describes the development of female cone, the megasporogenesis, megagametogenesis, pollen germination and embryogenesis in three native species of Podocarpus from Argentina. During the first stage the primordium of the ovule is covered by the bracts. The megaspore mother cell gives rise to a linear tetrad. The chalazal megaspore is functional which undergoes free nuclear divisions. An archegonial complex with five to six archegonia is originated in the female gametophyte. After pollination, fertilization takes place, and an embryo with two cotyledons is formed. The reproductive process described here shows a similar pattern of development as in most of the conifers.
