Abstract:

Paleomagnetic study of a 3-m thick sequence containing 302 glacial varves outcropping in Alto Rio Mayo valley shows strong intensities, a declination shifting gradually to the west and an increasing negative inclination. Virtual geomagnetic pole positions reveal a migration of the geomagnetic pole from NE Canada-SW Greenland to a position around NW Siberia. The deposit is believed to represent the interval between the recession of the last glacial maximum and a final ice front oscillation, with a readvance in the Alto Río Mayo valley thought to have occurred shortly before 13 500 yr B.P. © 1990.
