Abstract:

We compute the spectral distribution of energy obtained when a plane electromagnetic wave is scattered at a rough boundary between a vacuum and a metal. The boundary is constructed as the sum of two contributions: a perfectly periodic, sinusoidal roughness representing an ideal grating and a statistically varying roughness representing the defects of a real diffraction grating. We solve Maxwell's equations using Rayleigh expansions together with a surface impedance boundary condition, a procedure which restricts us to consider only highly conducting and shallow gratings. Our results show that when the magnetic field is parallel to the grooves, the plots of scattered light exhibit peaks that do not change their position with the angle of incidence. The angular position of the peaks conforms closely to the same law which governs the creation of a photon from a surface plasmon, a fact which seems to indicate that the peaks could correspond to a form of stray light known in the literature as surface plasmon scattering or diffuse light bands. © 1991.
