An examination was made of diffraction effects that become apparent when measuring optical surfaces by the method of the caustic and direct observation of the zone. The sensitivity was calculated for several wire diameters or focal positions. The optimum wire diameter is 0·6 of the diameter of the diffraction image, and the test is more sensitive for the method of symmetrical illumination with an extra-focally located wire than for the method of minimum illumination and the wire at the focal position. © 1971 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
