Abstract:

We studied effects of shelter supplementation on population and individual parameters of two rodent species, Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha in pampean agroecosystems of Central Argentina during winter. The study was conducted using mark and recapture samplings in six cultivated fields with sunflower in stubble stage and their adjacent borders (longitudinal strips dominated by weedy species); three were considered as controls and three as experimentals with shelter addition. Shelter availability increased survival of A. azarae residents, which had greater body mass and better physical condition than the other individuals of this species. Shelter addition affected neither the immigration rates nor population abundance of both species. We concluded that winter shelter is a limiting factor for A. azarae's survival during the coldest winter period (July-August), but is not limiting for C. laucha.
