Abstract:

The demographic structure of a population of Scapteromys tumidus inhabiting a patchy environment in the delta of the Paraná River, in eastern Argentina has been studied. Density, residence, and reproduction have been associated to those microhabitats with a larger vegetation cover of low height (0.50 m). Our results emphasize the importance of vegetation cover in the generation of shelter sites, which S. tumidus would use for nesting and/or avoiding predation. Hence, both reproduction and residence of S. tumidus would be larger, maximizing population's fitness and, consequently, population's survival in the delta area. These results suggest that the habitat heterogeneity is most important regarding S. tumidus’ life history. © 1995, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved.
