The reaction of methanolic ammonia with α-octa-O-acetylcellobiose is described. From the reaction were isolated cellobiose, N,N′-diacetylcellobiosylidenediamine, and a hepta-O-acetyl-N-acetylcellobiosylamine which is considered the alpha anomer of the product already described as hepta-O-acetyl-N-acetylcellobiosylamine. The acetyl derivative of N,N′-diacetylcellobiosylidenediamine was prepared and the influence of solvent upon the reaction studied is discussed. © 1963, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
