The syntheses and infra-red spectra of some 1 : 10 phenanthroline (phen) derivatives of the sulphito compounds of palladium (II) are reported. The complexes are of two types: (a) those containing unidentate sulphito groups of C3v symmetry ([PdSO3NH3phen] and Na2[Pd(SO3)2phen]) and (b) the derivative [PdSO3phen], which probably has a bridge-type structure involving bidentate sulphito groups co-ordinated via both sulphur and oxygen atoms. In most cases the nature of the reaction products are dependent upon the extent of hydrolysis of the original sulphito complexes. © 1965.
