A measurement of the transition probabilities W1 and W 2 for the pure quadrupolar relaxation of 35Cl in paradichlorobenzene is interpreted in terms of the Woessner-Gutowsky theory. A supposition about two-torsional oscillation frequencies contributing simultaneously to the relaxation is found to produce a good agreement with experiment at a temperature of 77°K. This is shown to be a transition temperature, because at lower temperatures the relaxation is governed principally by the oscillation of lower frequency, while at higher temperatures it is governed by the oscillation of higher frequency.
