Abstract:

Knowledge of absorption and scattering coefficients is relevant to different areas such as for the prediction of colors. They are also important for leaves, where they are connected with photon transport and photosynthesis. An experiment was conducted to calculate the absorption and scattering coefficients on leaves. Leaves from the species Citrus aurantium, Ficus benjamina, Gardenia jasminoides, Hedera helix and Ligustrum vulgare were used. Diffuse reflectance was recorded as a function of wave-length from 450-700 nm for individual leaves and from groups of eight stacked leaves and diffuse transmittance. Results show that near infrared reflectance of leaves is determined by their structure while middle infrared reflectance is determined by the water content of the leaves. However, between 400-700 nm, reflectance is mainly determined by the absorption of the photosynthetic pigments. The absorption is due to chlorophylls a and b for wavelengths longer than 550 nm. For shorter ones, the absorption is determined mainly by chlorophylls a, b and carotenoids. The experiment also showed that the method used, the Kubelka-Munk theory and the model of the pile of plates, is adequate for calculating absorption and scattering coefficients of leaves.
