Abstract:

On the basis of geomagnetic activity indices Dst and solar wind parameters (velocity and density), we calculate the kinetic energy of the equatorial ring-current during the development of a magnetic storm, following the hypothesis of Sckopke's theorem. Supposing that the relaxation mechanisms of the plasmaspheric drift current which lead to the pre-storm state are always present and depend solely on the kinetic energy, it is found that the major part of the energy gain is lost, except during the main phase, when the interplanetary magnetic field permits it to be stored. © 1995.
