Abstract:

Recognizable micro-and mesoscopic features in outcrops, cores and/or images that identify the presence of flattening by burial that influence the interpretation of the petrophysical characteristics of lithologies that support an oil system are described. Also, the burial determines variations of compaction rates in function of the original petrological and tectosedimentary characteristics that can affect tectonic and stratigraphic interpretations. The pelitic and carbonate levels are the main contributors to the flattening because they can suffer more than 40% reduction of their thickness with respect to the original values due to the expulsion of the water that accompanied their deposition complemented by the reorganization of the laminar minerals. These modifications have an impact on the tectosedimentary evaluations and directly on the quality of the petrophysical conditions (porosity and permeability) of the rocks that are essential in the definition of the exploratory and / or productive potential of associated petroleum systems. © 2018, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
