Abstract:
Two kinds of metavolcanic rocks were recognised in outcrops of the Aluminé Formation located to the north of the town of Aluminé. Mineralogical, textural and chemical characteristics reveal the andesitic nature of the protolith. Metamorphic paragenesis of the meta-andesite I consists essentially of veins and nodules of orthoclase, diopsidic clinopyroxene, andraditic garnet, magnetite, quartz and calcite, sequentially from the edge to the centre. This assemblage appears also as a pervasive alteration of the rock. Orthoclase was also formed from plagioclase crystals by a previous metasomatic process, Clinopyroxene, garnet, magnetite and quartz were formed under hornblende hornfels facies conditions. Magnetite, calcite, quartz and other minerals, such as epidote, zoisite, tremolite-actinolite, albite, chlorite, sphene, pyrite and chalcopyrite, indicate greenschist facies. Prehnite with albite, tremolite-actinolite, chlorite and quartz are indicative of the prehnite-actinolite facies. Stilbite crystallisation is the latest stage, in zeolite facies. In meta-andesite II, the hornblende hornfels facies is defined by the presence of hornblende, biotite, plagioclase and quartz; a partial replacement of these minerals by epidote, zoisite, chlorite, calcite, actinolite, sphene, pyrite and chalcopyrite indicates the presence of the greenschist facies. The metamorphism in the meta-andesitic rocks spans the hornblende hornfels- to zeolite facies pointing to a retrograde process. Granitic bodies present in the area would have triggered the transformations in the andesites.
