Abstract:

The eliptical form of the outcrop of the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper and the giant caldera of Cerro Galán is compared with the Andean strain field in the surrounding areas. The eliptic shape (R=1.69 with major axis trending N60°) and the spatial distribution of the Bajo La Alumbrera (27° 20' S-66° 37' W), are compatible with the transpressional strain field that characterises the Tucumán transfer zone. The Cerro Galán caldera (66° 55' W-25° 55' S) has an eliptical shape (R=1.20) and its N-S trending major axis (42 km long) is compatible with the E-W shortening at this eastern edge of the Altiplano-Puna. For both volcanic structures we infer a strong dependence of their bulk shape upon syn- and post-genetic Andean deformation. Thus it is possible to consider them as passive strain markers that complement the data obtained from analysis of meso- and micro-scale structures.
